Studio Zanaganda offers small group classes in traditional drawing & painting on a rotating basis with about 8 artists. Primary topic is portraiture, with occasional adventures into figure and still life. The best way to be notified of new class is the mailing list.

UPCOMING CLASS:

COLOR + LIGHT + PORTRAIT!

Sundays, Jan 25 - March 8, 4-8pm
A favorite class, we will use the format of portraiture to explore color, the interplay of light and its affects on the physical form when observing from life.

FIGURE

Sundays 4 - 8pm
December 7, 14, 21, 2025

Our focus will be on the academic approach to figure drawing and painting! The major emphasis will be on how to interrelate the different forms of the body to create beautiful compositions and intentionally designed figurative work.

The series will host 3 Sunday sessions (3-4 hrs each) with the same model (Kawena) in the same pose. I will do some lecture, light demo, suggest homework, and provide feedback during the course.

The challenge of the academic figure is that in unlocks a more structural sense of the human body, with opportunities to explore anatomy, rhythm, rendering, structure and form.

My figure approach is from years of atelier work: so emphasis will be on design accuracy, likeness, sound anatomy and strong gesture, and convincing form & light.

  • Sundays 4pm – 8pm (in person)

  • Beginner - Advanced

STILL LIFE

January 3,4 & 10,11
10-5pm Saturdays & Sundays

Join us as we all recover from the busy-ness of the holiday season with two weeks of contemplative still life work. Workshop has been extended to meet over 2 weekends for 4 full days of painting and learning!

We will focus on developing personal artwork from direct observation. Students can bring in their own objects or choose from a selection at the studio. We will begin with a lecture on the important components of good painting design, and then use the still life genre as a method for implementation of key concepts. Discussion topics will focus on solid drawing, composition, design, color control, edges, and efficiency.

The art of creating a still life brings a variety of aesthetic challenges together. Composition, color, rhythm, drawing, relationships, focus, depth of field - so many ways to engage with representational work!

  • Saturday & Sunday 10-5pm (4 days total)

  • Beginner - Advanced, Drawing or Painting
