Frequently Asked Questions
Do you teach beginners?
Absolutely! In fact, the beginner’s mindset is a best practice. Beginners get the best results when they are open-minded, approach the subject with humility, and listen + work on applying the feedback they receive. Learning to draw and paint what you see is a DIFFICULT and humbling task. The artists I have seen thrive the most are those willing to put in the work, stay curious, and not give up after the first few sessions.
I am already a professional, what could I possibly learn from you?
I have worked with many professional-level artists at fine-tuning their approach, offering new perspectives, or providing a sounding board for the many struggles of artistic practice. Coming in with a great knowledge base brings the conversation to a much more advanced level. I am always excited to discuss professional-level concerns!
Why are your classes always sold out?
I work with a VERY small group of artists. The benefit is a lot of personalized, individual instruction. There are occasional spaces that open up as folks transition their practice. The best way to be first to know about space is to contact me directly.
Do you use solvents?
Yes, I am a solvent-friendly oil painting studio. The studio itself has an air filter and reasonable circulation. I encourage students to only use what they need, keeping the VOCs to a minimum.
Can I draw instead of paint?
Absolutely! Good drawing is 95% of good painting.
Can I use alternative media?
My instruction & information is geared mostly towards oil painting and drawing with charcoal / graphite. If you are interested in using another media, such as acrylic or watercolor - let’s talk.
Can I visit the studio?
You are welcome to drop by at the beginning of a class meeting to check out the studio and see the working environment. Contact me to arrange a time to stop by.
